Abstract:
Previous studies on Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece have focused on the characters in the story. However, they have less addressed the question of their dress and its contradictory function in social relations. Madame Bovary shows that people are strongly influenced by the upper class of the society while choosing their clothes and appearances. In other words, the rich offer a form of unity to the masses, and deprive them of their individuality. To this end, the present study focuses on the process of transformation of the individual imposed on him by consumption. The subject of clothing is the basis of a story written to criticize a consumer society. The clothes and their contradictory function being at the origin of the creativity of the book will also constitute the subject of this study. If Flaubert's goal was to write a ‘book about nothing’, his view of the therein contradiction helped him achieve that goal. The study, based on the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu, examines the role of clothing in the process of socialization of the characters. It also tries to show its inverted function as well as its influence on the heroine of the novel.
