Abstract:
Objectives: Active aging aims to manage the conditions of old age and is an inevitable priority that requires identifying facilitators and barriers to active aging from the perspectives of stakeholders, so this study aimed to determine facilitators and barriers to active aging from the perspectives of older adults and geriatric experts.
Materials and methods: This qualitative content analysis was used to conduct semi-structured, in-depth, and focus group interviews with 20 older adults and 21 experts in 2022. The participants were selected purposefully based on maximum variation sampling and inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed through the conventional content analysis proposed by Lundman and Graneheim. Lincoln and Guba's criteria were used to determine data trustworthiness: Credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability.
Results: We extracted four main categories for barriers to active aging (individual, familial barriers, structural barriers in society, and health system barriers) and four main categories for facilitators of active aging (older adults’ capacity, family capacity, community capacity, and health system capacity).
Conclusion: Health system was one of the barriers to planning for active aging. The results of this study provide a valuable resource for experts in the field of aging, researchers and healthcare workers to identify facilitators and barriers to active aging and develop interventions to promote active aging.
